If you are starting a nursing program, a CNA course, or a clinical rotation in McHenry or Lake County, someone has handed you a checklist with a line on it that reads BLS Provider, American Heart Association. That line is specific. It is not the same as a general CPR class you might take for a coaching job or a babysitting gig, and showing up to clinicals with the wrong card usually means taking the right class over again on your own time.
Links4Life runs AHA BLS Provider classes in Lakemoor, about twenty minutes from Crystal Lake and Woodstock and closer than that from McHenry, Volo, and Johnsburg. Classes run seven days a week, and you leave with your card the same day.
What the BLS Provider course covers
BLS is the course written for people who will be working in a healthcare setting, which is why nursing schools, CNA programs, dental offices, and hospital HR departments ask for it by name. The class is hands on. You spend most of it on the floor with a manikin rather than watching slides.
- High quality CPR on adults, children, and infants
- Using an AED, including pad placement on a child
- Bag mask ventilation, including the two rescuer version
- Working as part of a team instead of running a code alone
- Relief of choking in a responsive and an unresponsive person
The full BLS Provider class is $85 and runs about 90 minutes. If your program asked for Heartsaver instead, that is a different course at a different price, and you can compare both on the class prices page before you book.
New card or renewal
Two different situations, two different classes.
- First time, or your old card is long gone: take the full BLS Provider class at $85, about 90 minutes.
- Renewing: BLS Renewal is $79 and runs 45 to 60 minutes, but you need to finish HeartCode Part 1 online first and bring the completion certificate with you.
That HeartCode certificate trips up more students than anything else. Part 1 is the online portion. It does not certify you on its own, and no employer or program will accept it as a card. The in person skills session is what produces the card, which is what the renewal class is.
How far you are actually driving
Students in this part of northern Illinois often assume they have to drive down toward the city or wait for a hospital to open a session to the public. You do not. Classes are held at 28959 Pilgrims Pass in Lakemoor, which is a straightforward drive from Crystal Lake, Woodstock, McHenry, Johnsburg, Spring Grove, Volo, Wauconda, Island Lake, Round Lake, Fox Lake, and Grayslake.
The class is taught by Ray Mamerow, a certified American Heart Association instructor with more than 30 years in healthcare who has been teaching CPR since 2010. You leave with the card in your hand
Every class ends with a two year AHA card issued at the end of class. There is no waiting for something to arrive in the mail and no follow up email you have to chase down. That matters when your program coordinator wants proof uploaded by a deadline, because you can photograph the card in the parking lot and send it before you drive home.
Scheduling around clinicals and shifts
Classes run seven days a week, roughly 9:00am to 6:30pm, and weekend classes are available on request. There is no waiting list, so you are picking a time rather than hoping a seat opens up.
If you found out today that your card lapsed and your rotation starts tomorrow, emergency scheduling is $150 and is often available the same day or the next day. If your whole cohort or your department needs cards at once, onsite group training comes to your location and is quoted per group at group rates.
