You Start the Job Monday and Need a BLS Card: Classes Near Island Lake, Spring Grove, and Johnsburg

The offer came through, HR sent the onboarding packet, and somewhere on page three there is a line about a current BLS card due before your first shift. Your start date is a few days out. That is a small problem with a short fix, and it does not have to cost you the job.

Here is how to read the requirement, pick the right course the first time, and walk out with an American Heart Association card near Island Lake, Spring Grove, and Johnsburg.

Read the Requirement Word for Word

New hire paperwork for clinical and patient facing roles usually names both the organization and the level. The specifics are the whole thing, because the wrong class is a full do over on your own time and your own money. Look for these phrases:

  • American Heart Association or AHA. Naming the organization means the card has to come from that organization.
  • BLS or Basic Life Support. The healthcare provider level course. Standard for hospital, clinic, dental, long term care, and most roles working alongside medical staff.
  • Hands on skills, in person skills check, or skills session. That line rules out an online only certificate.
  • CPR and AED or CPR, AED and First Aid. Non provider level, which usually points to Heartsaver rather than BLS.

If the line just says CPR certified and stops there, do not guess at it. Text a photo of that page to 815-690-0664 and get it confirmed before you book. One minute of checking is cheaper than two classes.

New Card or Renewal

Which seat you book depends on what you are holding right now. If you have never had a BLS card, or you had one and it has already lapsed, you need the full provider course. If your card is still current and you are renewing it ahead of the new job, the renewal is shorter.

  • BLS Provider, $85, 90 minutes. First BLS card, or a BLS card that has already expired.
  • BLS Renewal, $79, 45 to 60 minutes. Current BLS card being renewed. Requires your HeartCode Part 1 online completion certificate before you arrive.
  • Heartsaver CPR AED, $95, 2 to 3 hours. Adult, child, and infant CPR plus AED, for roles that are not healthcare provider level.
  • Heartsaver First Aid, $95, 1 to 2 hours. Bleeding, burns, falls, and other everyday injuries. Some packets ask for this alongside CPR.

Every price is listed on the class prices page. The provider and renewal courses are laid out on the BLS page, and the non provider courses are on the Heartsaver CPR AED page and the Heartsaver First Aid page.

The HeartCode Step People Miss

BLS Renewal requires the HeartCode Part 1 online completion certificate. You finish the knowledge portion online on your own time, then come in for the hands on skills session. Bring the certificate printed or pulled up on your phone. Without it the renewal cannot go forward, and that is a wasted trip on a week when you do not have spare days.

If your card expired already, skip HeartCode and book BLS Provider instead. If you are not sure which side of that line you are on, read the expiration date off the card and call it in.

When the Start Date Is This Week

Classes run seven days a week, roughly 9:00am to 6:30pm, with weekend classes available on request. There is no waiting list, so you are not sitting behind a group of twenty people waiting for a seat to open in three weeks.

If your deadline is immediate, emergency scheduling is $150 and is often available the same day or the next day. That is more than a standard seat, and it is less than losing a start date.

If your employer hired several people at once and all of you need cards before orientation, onsite group training comes to you at group rates, quoted per group. You can start that at the onsite group training page, and it is often simpler than sending six new hires out one at a time.

You Leave With the Card in Your Hand

Every class ends with a two year AHA card issued at the end of class. There is no waiting on a mailer and no checking a portal for a week while your onboarding deadline passes. You finish the skills session, you get the card, and you send it to HR or your clinical coordinator that same day.

While you are still holding it, set a calendar reminder for a month before the expiration date. The last minute scramble is almost always a tracking problem rather than a scheduling one.
